Jurij Skalski

Jurij Tomasz Skalski, callsign Defect, is a Yuktobanian-born ex-Yuktobanian Air force and ex-Sapinish Air Force member of the IUN Peacekeeping Mission in Sapin. The only child of a pilot for a regional airline and a stay-at-home mom, he joined the Yuktobanian Air Force in December 1981, only a few weeks after his 18th birthday, starting his lifelong employment in aviation.

Early life

Born in Chrząsczyżewoszyce, Yuktobania on December 1st, 1963, he spent most of his childhood around airplanes, thanks to his father being an An-24 pilot for a local airline. Soon after his 18th birthday, he joined the Yuktobanian Air Force, earning his wings in 1984 and being posted to the 112th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 9th Air Division, flying the Su-27PU as his primary aircraft.

Service in Yuktobania

Soon after his assignment, the 112th moved to a makeshift airbase near the Glubina Mountains, which saw multiple pilots hospitalized with frostbite within a month. In early 1986, due to the rising tensions around the Tyumen border dispute with Kaluga, the unit was reassigned to an airbase located in the constituent country of Romny. He would see combat during the resulting border skirmish, scoring two kills while covering his flight's retreat, before being shot down by a Kalugan F-15E, suffering minor shrapnel injuries.

Afterwards, he was honorably discharged from the Yuktobanian Air Force together with the rest of the 112th. Due to the political turmoil resulting from a near-war with Kaluga, he opted to leave Yuktobania, settling in Sapin in 1989.

Civilian life

He settled on the outskirts of Gran Rugido in 1989, living off odd jobs and part-time work before becoming a cropduster pilot at the Gran Rugido Vineyard in 1991. He lived this way until 1994, when, due to rising tensions with Belka, he decided to pull himself out of retirement and join the Sapinish Air Force.

Sapinish Air Force service and the Belkan War

Due to his prior flight training and combat experience, he only underwent a six-month retraining course, being commissioned as an Alférez in January 1995. He was assigned to the 173rd Training Squadron as an OPFOR pilot, flying the F-15D. He spent most of the Belkan War training Sapinish pilots, only seeing minor combat during the opening Belkan invasion. At the war's end, the 173rd was assigned to cover the early ceasefire talks in Dinsmark, later signed as part of the Lumen Accords. He did not fight against the AWWNB uprising in December 1995.

IUN Peacekeeping Mission in Sapin

Due to the internal troubles Sapin was experiencing in 1996, he decided to request a transfer to the newly-formed IUN-SPK. Not seeing any combat due to the combined Socialist-Fascist assault on the city of Gran Rugido, he evacuated to the Republican base at Alcazaba on September 30th, 1997, along with the rest of the peacekeepers.

He later proved himself as one of the Civil War's highest scoring pilots, with the first of his many kills throughout the conflict coming from three escort fighters shot down while repelling a Fascist bomber raid on October 19th.

On October 25th, he flew as part of a flight escorting supplies and evacuating refugees from the city of Dos Hermanas. He scored a further two kills on that mission, against Su-24 Fencers operated by the Fascist forces. He saw further combat in October and early November, assisting in the battle of Trueno, the Liberation of Gran Rugido, and covering a MEDEVAC operation by Fascist forces.

On November 13th, he flew as the lead of Pavise flight, involved with the ill-fated engagement at the 11th Parallel, scoring a further seven kills on Monarchist F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets.

Four days later, he was deployed as part of Cutlass flight, assisting the VNS Zhuoli with intercepting arms smuggling operations in the Futuro Canal. Late in the sortie, he was able to shoot down two modified F-16 prototypes, which attempted to sink the Zhuoli.

Over the course of the rest of November, he took part in operations including reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and supply escorts.

On November 27th, he was deployed to escort Sunflower, a flight of three aircraft chartered by the Count of Mondragon, in evacuating civilians from Rosabaica. He managed to shoot down sixteen aircraft during the sortie, four being Typhoons flying under commands from Infante Alonso, and a further twelve being F3H Demons, sent by the Golden Order to overwhelm the IUN's escort.

On December 2nd, he was deployed as the lead of Gunmetal flight, meant to escort a representative of the Nordlands United Rapid Factory to Gran Rugido. During the sortie, the flight was ambushed by a group of four MiG-31 Foxhounds, believed to be veteran mercenaries hired by Sapinish Senator Peluda. During the fight, he managed to shoot down one of the bandits, with the rest of the flight scoring two kills. However, this came at the cost of Gunmetal 3, Rafaél 'Squirt' Irazazábal being shot down and wounded. He remains the only Peacekeeper shot down over Sapin.

Throughout December, Defect continued to fly, being deployed to more recon and air-to-ground sorties, as well as being part of the flight meant to intercept the Yuktobanian submarine Scinfaxi, found in Sapinish waters in November.

On December 15th, he was chosen to be part of Forest flight, meant to perform an airshow over the Sapinish Peace Talks. However, as the Fascist forces, in collaboration with the Prince, unleashed a giant cruise missile attack, he was forced to engage in defending Gran Rugido from complete destruction. In the end, he was responsible for 26 of the 64 cruise missiles shot down east of the city, with the peacekeepers suffering no losses outside of Forest 4, Reyna 'Queen' Espinosa, who was severely wounded after her EF-111F went down due to an apparent explosion of the onboard IEWS suite. She was later rescued by a ground element attending the peace talks, and survived.

His last combat deployment of the war came on December 20th, during the Prince's mass assault on Gran Rugido, meant to destroy the Peacekeepers once and for all.

He ended the war with 68 kills, split between 38 aircraft (1 on the ground), 4 air-to-air missiles and 26 BGM-109 Gryphon cruise missiles.

Office Duties

Over the course of the war, he was oftentimes assigned to monitor the IUN's procurement budget, which oftentimes ran dry. This was due to a mix of underfunding, unnecessary spending, and large-scale purchases of aircraft parts, primarily for the Flanker family, which constituted a large part of Peacekeeper forces during the conflict. Due to the fact he openly voiced his displeasure with the procurement officers responsible for said purchases, he was known as the “#1 Flanker Parts Enthusiast”.

Post-war

He remained in the IUN-SPK until it was dissolved in 2002. Afterwards, using a combination of savings and a war pension he was awarded due to his uncle's untimely death as a volunteer in the SPA, he opened a flight school known as Defect's Air Crew Training, offering both propeller and jet aircraft training. He also owns and operates a TA-4J Skyhawk trainer aircraft, purchased at some point after 2002.
